Golf: Know How to Deal with Fairways

Keeping the golf course healthy is a demanding task. The fairway and green has to be kept fit at all times. The grass will obviously get damaged when over forty thousand players use the fairway. Golf course caretakers and owners would recommend a number of crucially important things to ensure a proper management of fairway and green. Using the correct fertilizer is vital to the green. Proper techniques must be adopted to maintain the fairway in proper condition.

A regular green grass color that does not give way in the fall or winter is an important task. This can be achieved with seeding and reseeding with the right kind of grass products. Some of the well known grass products are:

1. Pennington Annual Ryegrass

This grass product is best used on a seasonal or temporary area.

It offers best results when the grass is overseeded and when the weather is warm.

The onset of fall is the right time to plant.

Ten pounds every 1,000 square feet is the recommended seeding rate while it is five pounds every 1,000 square feet for reseeding.

2. Fairway Classics Perennial Ryegrass Lawn Seed Blend Tournament Quality

These ryegrasses are used in lawns during winter or lawns of the North blended with grasses planted permanently. The ryegrass can also be employed when reseeding the southern part.

The onset of the fall is the suitable time to plant the ryegrass.

Ten pounds every 1,000 square feet is the recommended seeding rate for seeding as well as reseeding.

Golf fairways: Tips to preserve and promote a healthy look

1. Use the correct fertilizer

In order to get and retain a good looking green all the year round, the most appropriate fertilizer is to be used. The grass requires organic nitrogen to maintain a healthy look. The fertilizer should be providing this in appropriate measure. Moreover, the fertilizer that is used should also not be polluting the streams, lakes and groundwater with nitrogen.

2. Regular use of fertilizer

The fairways and greens should be applied with fertilizer regularly. Use of the most appropriate fertilizer will ensure that the fairway and greens are not subject to any unwanted stress. This will assure the availability of the best condition conducive for play throughout the year.

3. Presence of Iron in the fertilizer

Iron in the right quantity in the fertilizer gives the grass the deep green color all over the fairway. Iron promotes growth of the grass as do nitrogen. Fertilizers with iron come in two forms - liquid sprays and dry granules. One could choose any one of these.

4. Managing the weeds

Controlling the weeds is the best way to manage them. Usually golf courses are not vulnerable to the growth of weeds. The tight and thick turf prevents or discourages the growth of weeds. But weeds are not unheard of also in golf courses. Excess moisture and light are known to promote growth of weed. Eliminating such conditions are required to prevent the propagation of weeds. With a good and thick growth of grass, there is less of moisture and light to enable the growth of weeds.

5. Control grass diseases and insects

Excessive top growth can result with speedy growth of the fairway. This is favorable for emergence of grass diseases and insects. This extreme top growth can be controlled or limited with the use of fertilizers that releases nitrogen slowly.

6. Keep the mower blades sharp

Always make sure that the mower blades are sharp. Golf course caretakers and owners need to ensure that the mower blades are sharp enough to cut grass rather than tear the grass. Tearing of grass will result in the fairway getting a grayish look. Besides this, the torn grass attracts diseases that then infests. Neat cutting of grass is the right way to mow as the grass itself is stressed lesser.

7. Prevent needless watering

Excess water can also damage the fairway and green. The color of the grass also turns paler with excessive water. The nutrients are also absorbed better with shallow but frequent watering. Moreover, this also ensures that the grass roots remain at the top layer of the soil itself.
